City of Valdez received notice from DHSS that a Valdez COVID death from a few months ago will be included in the DHSS case count update on Friday, 12/17/21. DHSS will indicate this is not a recent death and being reported following death certificate review. Valdez Public Health confirmed this death was already reported in our Valdez Local Case Count Dashboard at the time the death occurred. Thankfully, Valdez has not had an additional death. Our cumulative number of COVID deaths in Valdez remains at three residents and one non-resident.
This year’s Town Square ‘Hanukkah on Fire’ Family Festival is coming up Sunday November 28th at 5:00 pm in Anchorage Town Square. In addition to fire breathing and eating shows, there will be a ‘Thanksgivukah’ Charity Coin Menorah in support of the homeless and hungry. Go to www.alaskajewishcampus.org for more information.

The Copper Valley Electric Association Board of Directors will hold its regular board meeting on Thursday, November 18, 2021, beginning at 9 a.m. in the Valdez board room. There will be an executive session work session with the open meeting expected to resume at 1 p.m.

Alaskan author and scientist Terry Chapin will be speaking on “Local Actions for Reducing Climate Change and its Impacts” at the Copper Country Alliance annual meeting. KCHU is looking for people interested in serving on our Board of Directors. The Valdez City Council has extended the community-wide COVID-19 face mask mandate from now until Dec. 22, unless the mandate is otherwise extended or rescinded by the Valdez City Council. The Alaska Redistricting Board is in charge of drawing new maps for legislative seats every ten years. As a part of that process, the Board is traveling around the state to get feedback on six proposed new maps. Residents of the Cordova community are invited to come and share their thoughts on Monday, October 1st from 4:00 to 6:00pm at the Cordova Center 601 First Street. The City of Valdez is now accepting applications for the 2022 Energy Assistance Program to help relieve energy costs this winter. The program provides a $550 energy credit which can be applied to the electric or fuel oil account of a local residence or locally-owned business. Registration forms are available at City Hall or can be downloaded from the City’s website. Verification of residency or business ownership is required, so make sure to bring a recent energy bill and other required documentation if you apply in person at City Hall. Late applications will not be accepted. Deadline to apply is December 30th at 7:00pm.

It’s that time again — this week’s winners of the Alaska Chamber’s Give AK a Shot vaccine sweepstakes have been announced! Amber Groff (Anchorage) is the winner of the $49,000 cash prize and Lillian Croskrey (North Pole) is the winner of the $49,000 Alaska 529 scholarship. There are only three more days to enter the Alaska Chamber’s vaccine sweepstakes. The deadline for entries is 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 30. There are four remaining drawing pools and the final sweepstakes winners will be announced on Nov. 4.

Stage of the Tide presents the musical comedy ‘Guys and Dolls’ where everyone gambles on love November 5th and 6th in the Cordova Center’s North Star Theater. Tickets are $15 and available at the Cordova Museum, the Net Loft, and at the door. And just like on Broadway audience members over the age of 12 must present proof of vaccination or negative covid test results for entry.
