June Activities from Valdez Parks & Recreation

  • The City of Valdez is recognizing Juneteenth with some public events!  Attend our BROWN BAG LUNCH & LEARN at City Council Chambers on Friday, June 17 from 11:30 AM-1:30 PM.  Handouts and educational materials about Juneteenth available!  Then, recreate for a cause and join us for a COMMEMORATIVE WALK around town Friday from 3:30-5:00 PM at the Pioneer side of the Park Strip. Together, we walk for racial equality and freedom for all.  On Saturday, June 18th, we will be showing a FREE, special feature to the community at the Valdez Cinema. “HARRIET”, based on the story of iconic freedom fighter Harriet Tubman, rated PG-13, will be playing on Saturday evening at 7:00 PM.  We hope to see you there.
  • Please join Parks & Recreation and PWSC Valdez Archery Club on Friday, June 24th from 5:00pm-8:00pm at the Outdoor Archery Range by Gold Ball Fields for Community Archery Outdoor Fun Shoot! This is for anyone ages 7 and up, all children must attend by parent or legal guardian. There will be free food for you to enjoy, as well as some equipment available to shoot with – or you can bring your own!
  • Our 2nd annual Summer Solstice 5 & 10K Races are this Saturday, June 18th, from 8:00am-10:00am. Runners will begin at the Woodman Recreation Center and make their way out of town across the Duck Flats. Race maps will be available upon registration, and on-site registration will not be available. The race is subject to cancellation if under 15 participants are registered for this event. The registration deadline is 5:00pm on June 13th. Register online at www.valdezak.gov/register to reserve your bib.
  • Join us out at the Fireweed Disc Golf course this summer and partake in some healthy competition! The adult Flying Fireweed Disc Golf League is run utilizing the UDisc mobile app, an easy and efficient way to manage scores and players. Participants will be matched weekly, and have the flexibility to schedule their own matches! Session I runs June 6 – July 3, and Session II runs July 11 – August 7.   • Join PRCS out on Shoup Bay A Trail for Group Hikes. This is a free, family friendly activity, anyone is welcome (under 15 needs to be with an adult), and pre-registration is required. Come hike with us this Wednesday, June 15th, from 6:00PM – 8:00PM, and happy trails to ya! Visit www.ValdezAK.gov/Register to reserve your spot.
  • We have our first Featured Hikers of our 2022 Summer Valdez Trails Challenge – The Olsen Family! Get out on the trails, complete as many of the designated trails and find the hidden signs. Once you find the sign, snap a selfie to prove it and either post it to Facebook and tag us (@ValdezAlaskaFun) and use the hashtag #ValdezTrails, or email us your selfie at parksandrec@valdez.gov. Hikers that find the trail signs and let us know are entered to win our grand prize drawing!
  • Youth Climbing Club is a program designed to take your climbing skills to the next level! If you’re ready to take your enthusiasm from the indoor wall to the great outdoors. Club members meet twice per week and will work with experienced staff to prepare for their outdoor excursions, with equipment and transportation provided. Session 1 is June 6-20, every Monday from 11:00AM-3:00PM, intended for entering grades 6th-9th. Registration is required with a $30 fee per session.   • Join us for SUP Mondays all Summer long! Lead by our experienced local paddle enthusiast, Steve Radotich, each trip will take you somewhere new and exciting, while providing you with the proper instruction to accomplish a successful outing! Equipment is available for use on a first-come, first-served basis. Drop-in’s welcome, and you are required to wear a personal flotation device. This is a free program intended for ages 15 and up, from 6:00PM-8:00PM, with Robe Lake as the chosen spot to cover the basics on June 6th. Visit www.ValdezAK.gov/Register to reserve your spot.
  • Take it outside with the PRCS staff on one of our Summer outdoor trips for the Youth Adventure Program. Kayaking, hiking, paddle boarding – the opportunities for adventure are endless! This program is designed for those entering grades 6-9, all equipment is provided, and pre-registration is required. Our first session is kayaking Glacier Lake!   • Kids’ Summer Fun Day Camp is on their second week! The last day to sign up for Week 3 is this Wednesday, June 15th. Participants will take part in a number of activities throughout each day.   • Registration for Swim Lessons Session II (July 5-28) opens June 27th at 10:00am. Space is limited, so be sure to register fast by visiting www.valdezak.gov/register.
  • Tot Gym is every Monday & Wednesday at the Hermon Hutchens Elementary, from 10:00AM – 12:00PM, during the months of June and July. Swing by and let your littles get their wiggles out and have a great time with a variety of fun toys and gym equipment!
  • This Summer the Valdez Consortium Library is hosting a monthly book club for adults! Each month you will read a book of your choice on a certain topic and we’ll all chat about what we’ve been reading over some delicious food and drinks at one of our City’s local eateries. June is read a book by an LGBTQIA+ author. We will meet at The Fat Mermaid on Wednesday the 21st at 6:00pm.   • The CIVIC CENTER CINEMA is still hosting the 2022 Last Frontier Theatre Conference! In acknowledgement of Juneteenth we will have a free showing of the movie “Harriet”, rated PG-13, on Saturday, June 18th at 7:00 PM. Based on the story of iconic freedom fighter Harriet Tubman.
