Valdez Police respond to Motor Vehicle Collision Fatality Near Mile 1.5 of the Richardson Highway

Valdez, AK – Valdez Police and Fire Departments responded to a motor vehicle collision fatality on the morning of Friday, December 16, 2022.
At approximately 8:10 a.m. Valdez Emergency Dispatch received a report of a two-vehicle motor vehicle collision near the Goldfields Softball Complex at approximately mile 1.5 of the Richardson Highway.
Valdez Fire Department and Valdez Police Department personnel responded to the scene and arrived at 8:18 a.m. to perform emergency medical services and investigate.
Upon arrival, it was immediately apparent by emergency personnel that the driver of one of the involved vehicles had been ejected from the vehicle and was deceased. The deceased driver was not wearing a safety belt at the time of the collision.
The deceased driver was identified as 31-year old Ashley Wiley of Valdez, next of kin have been notified.
VFD emergency medical services treated a juvenile passenger. The juvenile has been transported by helicopter from Providence Valdez Medical Center to Anchorage for additional treatment of life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the other involved vehicle declined medical assistance from VFD medics and had no apparent injuries or signs of impairment.
Valdez Police Department officers closed the Richardson Highway from approximately 8:20 a.m. to 10:38 a.m.
The cause of this collision remains under investigation. At this time impaired driving is not believed to have been a factor.
