A magnitude 7.0 earthquake centered eight miles north of Alaska’s largest city struck at 8:30 this morning. Damage in Anchorage caused widespread power outages, school closures and shutdown of some city bridges and roadways. Governor Bill Walker issued a declaration of disaster as crews worked to assess damage in Anchorage. Residents of Valdez took shelter throughout town during the quake.
