Valdez Museum Tuesday Night History Talk July 24

From Beverly Colapietro; Valdez Museum and Historical Archive

Lillian Moore was one of the first pioneer women to arrive in Valdez. She hailed from New England, and sailed around the Horn of South America, arriving in Valdez during the summer of 1898. An expert with horses, twenty-year-old Lillian joined army Captain Abercrombie’s August 1898 exploration of the Valdez Glacier. The glacier proved a challenging course for both man and beast. Horses would slip into crevasses–and while Abercrombie’s soldiers extracted them with ropes, block, and tackle, Lillian would lead four or five horses over the exacting trail. Lillian wrote a letter to her sister Lou that described her experiences during the expedition. She talked about the arduous exploits the team accomplished and the rugged privations endured as they explored the glacier route from Valdez to Klutina Lake.

The Tuesday Nite History Talk on July 24 at the Valdez Museum will focus on Lillian’s life here in Valdez and the Tiekel River area. The narrative of her life is illustrated by period photos of her Roadhouse at Tiekel River plus photos taken around Valdez and along the grueling glacier trail. Viewers are sure to enjoy the pictures of Lillian’s photogenic pets, as well!

Please join us at 5:30 p.m., the fourth Tuesday of each month for Tuesday Nite History Talk at the Valdez Museum.
