Get inspired at Salmonfest 2018.

A combination of forces fresh and seasoned seems to be a theme for Salmonfest 2018. We’ve got a band of brothers playing together for over 20 years, Clan Dyken and a band fresh out of the oven, Risky Biscuits packing into a bus and heading up to Salmonfest. Starting from Northern California they will stop to play music and entertain on the way up to Ninilchik and back. 9 band members at least one crew member lots of music and don’t forget the Alcan, who knows what will happen.

According to The Risky Biscuits, the band brings an original mix of heel-kicking stompers and humble ballads, creating an eclectic mix of Americana, bluegrass, rock, soul, and country. With members originating from Boston, New Jersey, Tennessee, and California, the Biscuits provide the kind of sound that only develops when backgrounds and styles collide. The band aims to cross genres in a way that is progressive, yet fundamentally simple. “Things can go from psychedelic, to folksy and back in the time it takes to grab a beer. Wouldn’t be too “risky” of a band if switching it up wasn’t a big part of the formula,” wrote The Risky Biscuits.

Mixing it up with another band, like Clan Dyken is right up their alley. Clan Dyken continues to refine the tribal-funk-eco-folk-rock-hippy-soul music they’ve been making for more than 20 years. And with a passion for activism and positive change, in 1992 Clan Dyken recorded the world’s first completely solar powered album, Shundahai, in Hawaii and then donated the solar panels to a local Native school. Today, they continue their work resisting forced relocation of the Dine’ (Navajo) Nation due to their opposition to the world’s largest coal strip mine. Brothers Mark and Bear have harmonized, toured, activated, and entertained for more than two decades.

Mark Dyken will be the driver up to Alaska. “This is the farthest North this side of the pond,” he confided. But he’ll use his CDL training, years of bus driving and his excitement to be a part of Salmonfest to make the trip as smooth as possible. He’s stock piling parts in preparation. Travel, activism and music is nothing new for Clan Dyken it is who they are.

While Alaska might not have captured the interest of Clan Dyken members years ago it did for one of their brothers, Leon. One of eight in the Dyken clan, Leon was, “always looking for a place to feel at peace,” Mark reminisced.  After passing away in January, brothers Mark and Bear will bring their brothers ashes to Alaska to rest in peace, per Leon’s request.

Clan Dyken has been called rebels, activists, organizers, role models, and rock and rollers. And they say, “along the way they have become the change that they want to see in the world.” Come get inspired by the music and artists at Salmonfest.
