Prince William Sound RCAC board to meet in Whittier

Council sponsoring free community events in conjunction with the meeting

The Prince William Sound Regional Citizens’ Advisory Council will hold a board meeting in Whittier on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 14-15, 2017. The meeting will be located at the Inn at Whittier, at 5A Harbor Loop Rd.

 

Board meeting tentative schedule and agenda items

The tentative schedule for the Thursday board meeting session is from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. On Friday, the meeting is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The meeting is open to the public, except for executive sessions. Public comments are tentatively scheduled to be taken Thursday starting at 9:40 a.m.

 

The council will be conducting regular business during the meeting, including updates from council ex-officio members, staff and committees. Other topics included on the agenda are:

  • Presentations by Alyeska Pipeline Service Company, the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation and the council regarding the change in Alyeska’s marine services contract provider from Crowley Marine Services to Edison Chouest Offshore set to take place July 1, 2018.  These services include key oil spill prevention and response assets such as escort tugs, oil recovery barges and associated personnel for service in Prince William Sound.
  • A presentation by council staff and contractors Nuka Research and Planning Group and Little River Marine Consultants on recommended modeling, field demonstrations and training to be conducted as part of the transition from Crowley Marine Services to Edison Chouest Offshore.
  • A presentation by council staff on the status of amendments to the Prince William Sound Tanker Oil Discharge Prevention and Contingency Plan and Alyeska’s Valdez Marine Terminal Oil Discharge Prevention and Contingency Plan.
  • A report of the council’s monitoring of drills and exercises in 2016.
  • A panel discussion regarding a recent Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council study on the status of Prince William Sound herring and its conclusions, along with other recent research.

 

The meeting agenda provided is subject to change before or during the meeting. Council board meetings are routinely recorded, and may be disseminated to the public by the council or by the news media.

“Masters of Disaster” – free, family-friendly event on Sept. 13

Ahead of the board meeting, council staff and volunteers will be presenting an educational, hands-on, “Master of Disaster” program. This event will take place Wednesday, September 13 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Whittier school. Whittier residents of all ages are invited to attend and learn about oil spill response through fun and interactive stations. Everyone who participates in each of the seven stations and gets their “Master of Disaster” passport stamped, will take home a free gift. The attached poster includes more information about the event.

 

Community reception on Sept. 14, open to the public

In conjunction with the board meeting, the board of directors for the council will be hosting a public reception on Thursday, Sept. 14, 2017. The reception will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on board the tour boat Klondike Express at the Whittier Cliffside Marina. The public is welcome to attend.

The Prince William Sound Regional Citizens’ Advisory Council, with offices in Anchorage and Valdez, is an independent non-profit corporation whose mission is to promote environmentally safe operation of the Valdez Marine Terminal and the oil tankers that use it. The council’s work is guided by the Oil Pollution Act of 1990, and its contract with Alyeska Pipeline Service Company. The council’s 18 member organizations are communities in the region affected by the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill, as well as aquaculture, commercial fishing, environmental, Native, recreation and tourism groups.
