People are pretty fed up with sad, scary and disturbing news. They’ve had it with man’s inhumanity to man, high prices and natural disasters. They’re looking for something good to happen, someone to admire. They’re looking for heroes. Well people in Valdez didn’t have to look very far last week, because we have our own home-town heroes. And they’re the type we can all be proud of.
Maybe it’s the popularity of Marvel and DC heroes in recent movies. There’s always been an intriguing aspect to the idea of wearing a costume to hide your identity and going out to help the world. Wherever they got their inspiration, three mysterious young people wearing masks and riding bicycles have been cruising around town performing good deeds. One local quipped that every town in America needs people like these kids and it’s hard not to agree. Instead of spending their time complaining that there’s nothing to do, sitting around playing games and watching television or looking for mischief to get into, they have been seeking out people in need of assistance and offering a helping hand. It’s not so unusual for kids to go out looking for odd jobs in the summer-time in order to earn some spending money. But doing them for free and keeping their identities a secret, that’s super hero stuff. It’s inspiring.

Maybe giving directions to lost tourists, taking out the trash at Mike’s Palace and other local businesses and even helping with the clean-up after the big Father’s Day celebration at The Valdez Senior Center aren’t exactly Superman flying in to save the day. But what about when they turned up at Bayside RV Park just in time to rescue a tent that had been picked up by the freshening breeze and dumped into the water? If not for them the campers would have come back from their exploration of Valdez to find it gone. And how did they manage to get there at exactly the right time? Those won’t be the only visitors who go home with stories about a bunch of really good kids in a little town in Alaska who found a way to have some fun and give other people a smile and a hand. They’re highly visible when they’re around and locals will no doubt be telling folks to be on the lookout for them. It’s nice to have good news to pass along and Alaskans do love a colorful story.
